A story about Vietnam

13 December, 2017

I’m watching the new TV series on Vietnam.

It’s got a 9.2 on IMDB. It’s a subject I kinda know something about, but not a whole lot. And I know it’s a really fucked-up story. And ain’t that the truth.

To really capture how fucked-up it was, I love this quote from Carl Sagan. It sums up the hypocrisy, the lies, and the grab for power at any cost.

For me, the most ironic token of that moment in history [the first human moon landing] is the plaque signed by President Richard M. Nixon that Apollo 11 took to the moon. It reads, ‘We came in peace for all Mankind.’ As the United States was dropping seven and a half megatons of conventional explosives on small nations in Southeast Asia, we congratulated ourselves on our humanity. We would harm no one on a lifeless rock.

And so I find me asking myself, as I watch The Vietnam War TV series, and as I watch the news on the ABC  … “Do we ever learn?”
